What to Wear for Your Engagement Pictures in Minnesota

Are you engaged and planning a photo shoot but are unsure of what to wear for your engagement pictures? I’ve got you covered! Let’s walk through the biggest do’s and don’ts together.

Do’s

Coordinate, Don’t Match

Let’s ditch the whole matching-everything vibe. Instead, go for outfits that vibe together! Think of colors and styles that complement each other, making both of you stand out while blending seamlessly.

Pick your base colors from a neutral and earthy-toned palette; they photograph well and will make you look very put together while not making your outfit too matchy-matchy.  Choose one or two accent colors to spice it up, but you can honestly keep your outfits all neutral, too!

Maybe a texture to your earth-toned outfit is what’s gonna take it to the next level; look at chunky knit cardigans, flowy dresses, or both! Choose a patterned blazer to add interest while keeping your color palette neutral.

If you want to add more color to your engagement picture outfits, I’d suggest you go for soft pastel tones because lighter colors will always look good on camera.

Work With Your Location

Your chosen location is not only a backdrop for your engagement photoshoot but an important tool to use to the max! Whether we are shooting in the city or in the Lake Bemidji State Park, choose your outfit to match the location.

Glam up for the city or put on your hiking boots, I’d suggest you always take two to three outfits with you. Having options will not only make your engagement photo shoot more varied but will allow you to interact with your surroundings more. Lying down in a field of flowers, playing with the autumn leaves, or even taking a splash in the lake might be too much to ask if you don’t have another outfit ready to change into.

Don’t take too much with you, especially if you are making an adventure out of your engagement photo shoot, but two or three outfits with some creative layers will be perfect!

Dress For The Season

Whether you have your shoot on the seaside or in a sprawling forest, the season is gonna dictate a lot about your outfit.

Spring

Embrace the spring energy with pastel hues like blush pinks, soft blues, and minty greens. Flowing dresses with floral patterns or light suits with a hint of color will be perfect for spring and will photograph well. Consider incorporating accessories like flower crowns or boutonnieres!

Summer

Summer calls for breathable fabrics and cool tones. Flowy maxi dresses in light, airy materials, and tailored shorts paired with breezy shirts are your go-to options. Think about embracing nature’s palette with soft yellows, sky blues, or sandy neutrals. Don’t forget to accessorize with sun hats and shades for that effortless, sun-kissed look.

Fall

As the leaves change, so can your wardrobe! Rich, earthy tones like deep burgundies, warm oranges, and cozy browns blend seamlessly with autumn’s landscape. Consider layering with chunky knits, stylish scarves, and jackets that add texture and warmth. These elements not only keep you cozy but also make for stunning visual contrasts against the changing scenery.

Winter

Winter engagement sessions have their own enchanting charm! Embrace the chilly air with layers and cozy textures like faux fur, wool, and velvet. Deep jewel tones like emerald greens, royal blues, and regal purples are absolute showstoppers against a snowy backdrop. For example, you can see emerald shine in this beautiful winter wedding!

Don’ts

While these are not absolutes, here are some good tips to keep in mind when choosing the important outfit for your engagement photos:

  • Stay away from outfits that restrict your movement or don’t make you feel comfortable. Let yourself both look amazing and be comfy!
  • All-black outfits typically don’t photograph that well, so lighten it up unless all-black is a must-have for your heart!
  • Overly business-like and stiff is not the way to go. We are aiming for cozy and cute to show your personalities!
  • Even tho athleisure wear is everywhere now, it’s not the way to go for your engagement photos. Let’s leave gym clothes at home!
  • Big logos or branding on your clothes might take the focus away from you and your partner, so it is better to opt for something without them. But hey, a fun graphic tee might just be what is the truest to you and your partner!
  • When deciding what to wear for engagement pictures, opt for a timeless look –  chasing the newest trendy fashion might not be the best idea.
