I’m gonna be so real with you, family sessions are a delightful mix of 50% joyful chaos and 50% pure magic… and this session with the Klegstad fam had ALL of it. 

This was my first time photographing their beautiful family, and let me tell you, we had a blast! From the moment they stepped into the field, it was clear we were going to have fun. We had the best time capturing giggles and snuggles, and it was one of those sessions that reminded me exactly why I LOVE full family sessions so much.

Why Full Sessions Are My Favorite for Fall Family Photography

I get it, life gets busy, kids are wild, and mini-sessions sound super tempting. I know it can feel like a lot—coordinating outfits, getting everyone out the door, making sure snacks are packed—but when we’re not rushing, magic happens.

Full family sessions give us time. Kiddos often need time to warm up. It takes more than five minutes for little ones to feel comfortable in front of a camera, and once they do—oh boy, do the real smiles come out!! I love getting to know your family during that time. It lets us go beyond just the posed shots and dive straight into all the personality, connection, and wild joy that make your fam yours.

With the Klegstads, it took about 10 minutes for the kids to warm up. (Totally normal btw!) So we played some games like tag around mom and dad, “who can run the fastest,” and my personal favorite: “hug attack!” Within minutes, those unsure expressions turned into full-on giggles, and that really got the ball rolling!

A Fall Backdrop That’s Not Too “Fall”

When this sweet fam told me they didn’t want the classic red-and-orange fall leaves look, I was like: say less. So, we chose a soft, open field full of tall grasses and rolling hills just outside Bemidji, MN, and it turned out absolutely perfect.

One of the best parts about shooting in wide open spaces like this one? It gives kids the freedom to be themselves. We’re not confined to one tiny backdrop or asking toddlers to stay still in one spot (because let’s be real—that rarely works anyway!). They can explore, roam, and just play. And when they’re playing, they’re laughing, and when they’re laughing, I’m capturing all those moments you’ll treasure forever.
